Prince George’s Co. is ready to crack down on owners of abandoned properties, but it has to find them There are thousands of blighted, abandoned and vacant properties all over Prince George’s County, Maryland. But exactly how many there are, and where they are, isn’t known by the county. And the agency tasked with enforcing upkeep of those thousands has all of four people to handle it all. That’s some of the information that came out of a county council committee hearing Thursday, as county lawmakers discussed a bill to help crack down on the eyesore properties. The legislation being pushed by council member Krystal Oriadha starts with the creation of a registry of all the vacant properties around the county. It was assumed there was one, but there isn’t.Leaders in the county’s Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement (DPIE) said they were aware of about 4,500 properties that would make that list, if one existed, but there’s no organized list.“When we talk about development in our communities, making sure that we tackle this vacan...

(AP) — Nearly three months after severe flooding inundated Vermont’s capital city, Montpelier businesses launched an event Friday to celebrate how much they’ve rebuilt — and remind the public not to forget them as they struggle to make a complete comeback. The small city of about 8,000 is celebrating its ongoing recovery with food trucks, music and street performers in hopes of drawing visitors downtown and giving shops a chance to sell their merchandise in sidewalk sales. “It’s really a way to acknowledge our progress,” said Katie Trautz, executive director of Montpelier Alive, a group that holds events and promotes city businesses. “It’s a symbolic kind of reopening celebration, like we’re turning a page here. …. Businesses are reopening every week.”Rain will likely fall at times during the two-day event, although Trautz said a weather forecaster has assured organizers that heavy rains will likely be west of the city. Stock market today: Wall Street leaps after eventually finding things to like in nuanced jobs report NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street rallied in a whipsaw Friday and erased its morning losses after looking deeper into the nuances of a surprisingly strong report on the U.S. job market. The S&P 500 climbed 1.2% after charging back from an earlier drop of 0.9%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 288 points, or 0.9%, and the Nasdaq composite flipped to a gain of 1.6%. Stocks initially tumbled after a report showed U.S. employers added nearly twice as many jobs last month as economists expected. The strength raised worries that a too-hot job market could keep upward pressure on inflation, which in turn could push the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates higher than investors want. Treasury yields leaped following the release of the report, and the yield on the 10-year Treasury again soared to its highest level since 2007. It was at 4.78%, up from 4.72% late Thursday. Wall Street hates high interest rates because they knock down prices for all kinds of investments. And even though th...

Candy factory didn’t evacuate concerned workers before Pennsylvania explosion that killed 7, OSHA finds (CNN) — An eastern Pennsylvania candy factory didn’t evacuate its employees – even as some said they smelled gas – before an explosion in March that left seven people dead and nearly a dozen others injured, the US Department of Labor announced.R.M. Palmer, a Pennsylvania-based candy maker, was cited for failing to evacuate its workers during a natural gas leak, not having a clearly marked exit sign on one of its doors and for using spliced flexible cords at its West Reading manufacturing plant, according to a citation from the department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).“Seven workers will never return home because the R.M. Palmer Co. did not evacuate the facility after being told of a suspected gas leak,” OSHA Area Director Kevin T. Chambers said in a Thursday news release. “Ensuring the safety of a workplace is expected of employers and required by law. The company could have prevented this horrific tragedy by following required safety procedures.”The ex...

Battenfeld: Maura Healey criticized for failing to act to stop exploding migrant crisis in Massachusetts Even as criticism continues to reverberate for the Army-Navy game hotel debacle, Gov. Maura Healey – unlike some other Democrats – has failed to take aggressive steps to stop the flow of migrants into Massachusetts.Healey in fact has called for smoothing the way for migrants to come into the state and work here while spending more than a million dollars a day contracting with hotels in overwhelmed cities and towns to house the migrants.“All of her statements and actions indicate she is supportive of the resettlement of these migrants into Massachusetts,” said Jessica Vaughan, director of the Center for Immigration Studies. “She’s not interested in alleviating the effects of this influx on cities and towns in Massachusetts. She’s not interested in considering any negative effects on citizens of the Commonwealth.”Healey’s position runs counter to some elected Democrats who have begun distancing themselves from the migrant crisis and even urging families to stop coming into their citie...
