Pac-12 preview: Our assessment of the coaching Hot Seats, Cold Seats and nonexistent seats Scan the contract terms across the Pac-12, and one item leaps off the screen: Every coach will enter the 2023 season with at least five years of security.Sure, terminations can strike at any point. But a coaching change following this season — or next season, for that matters — would assuredly carry a massive buyout for the coaches at the 10 public schools required to make the contracts available. That suggests ultra-low levels of heat for each coach. But the Hotline prefers to gauge the seat temperature one or two layers down, where contract details fade and the reality of a win-now profession lurks.(Please note: Salaries cited below are taken from published reports or school disclosures and are averaged for the duration of the term.)Arizona’s Jedd FischContract: signed through 2027 (salary: $3.3 million)Seat heat: Chilly as a late-November evening in Tucson: jacket and beanie required.Comment: Fisch is not in any danger of losing his job, even if Arizona fails to ...

Dick's 2Q profit falls, and the retailer lowers its full-year outlook on worries about theft Dick's Sporting Goods profit slipped in its second quarter and missed Wall Street's expectations as the retailer cut its full-year profit outlook, citing worries over theft at its stores.Shares declined more than 24% in morning trading Tuesday. For the period ended July 29, Dick's earned $244 million, or $2.82 per share. A year earlier the company earned $319 million, or $3.25 per share.Analysts polled by FactSet predicted earnings of $3.81 per share. Jailed Sam Bankman-Fried can’t prepare for trial without vegan diet and adequate meds, lawyers say “Our Q2 profitability was short of our expectations due in large part to the impact of elevated inventory shrink, an increasingly serious issue impacting many retailers,” President and CEO Lauren Hobart said in a statement.Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData, said in a statement that a large portion of Dick's quarterly profit drop appeared to be from theft.“In our view this is a particular issue for Dick’s as many of the prod...

US Senate chaplain a faith fixture for 20 years Congress is often unpredictable, but when the U.S. Senate convenes on Sept. 5 after the summer break, the session will begin with the reassuring baritone of the Rev. Barry Black. He has now served more than 20 years as the U.S. Senate chaplain, a witness to history who prays with the politically powerful, but who has also been known to admonish lawmakers when he gets a message from a higher power.Black’s two decades as chaplain mark the longest consecutive tenure for the position, which was formally established for the U.S. Senate in 1789. A native of Baltimore, he is also the first Black chaplain to serve in the upper chamber.Black came to Capitol Hill after an extensive military career, which included serving as the chief chaplain of the Navy.“The military is actually excellent preparation for ministry in the legislature,” he said, speaking at his office in the Capitol. While senators can have big egos, Black said he was used to being around people who are aware of...

A rice shortage is sending prices soaring across the world. And things could get worse

A rice shortage is sending prices soaring across the world. And things could get worse Francis Ndege isn’t sure if his customers in Africa’s largest slum can afford to keep buying rice from him.Prices for rice grown in Kenya soared a while ago because of higher fertilizer prices and a yearslong drought in the Horn of Africa that has reduced production. Cheap rice imported from India had filled the gap, feeding many of the hundreds of thousands of residents in Nairobi’s Kibera slum who survive on less than $2 a day.But that is changing. The price of a 25-kilogram (55-pound) bag of rice has risen by about a fifth since June, going from the equivalent of about $14 to $18. Wholesalers are yet to receive new stocks since India, the world’s largest exporter of rice by far, said last month that it would ban some rice shipments. It’s an effort by the world’s most populous nation to control domestic prices ahead of a key election year — but it’s left a yawning gap of around 9.5 million metric tons (10.4 tons) of rice that people around the world need, roughly...
