Comer will use muscle to get records out of John Kerry

It looks like Climate Czar John Kerry’s long ride of anti-transparency arrogance may be running out of gas.House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) is threatening to subpoena the Biden administration over documents related to climate envoy John Kerry’s office and work.As The Hill reported, Comer previously requested documents related to Kerry’s work as the special envoy for climate.Join the queue, Congressman. The Herald filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request back on May 13, 2021. Weeks turned into months turned into years, and no info has been forthcoming on Kerry’s staff or payroll. The State Department said the records are available, but added: “The Office of Information Programs and Services’ electronic records system indicates this request is in process and has an estimated date of completion (EDC) of Oct. 1, 2024. Please note EDC’s are estimates and are subject to change.”Even the State Dept. sent the records from D.C. by tortoise, it shouldn...Who needs Napa? Check out these great East Coast wines

What locations come to mind when someone says “wine region?” Maybe Napa Valley or Tuscany or the entire country of France? Sure, sure, those places aren’t bad. But what about something a little closer to home?Turns out that there are plenty of wonderful wine regions right here on the East Coast. Don’t buy it? From Long Island and Rhode Island, New Jersey and North Carolina, here are four vintages that might change your opinion of where to find the best wines.Anchor & Hope’s Archipelago Chardonnay ($20)The “archipelago” here refers to Long Island and Aquidneck Island, homes to the Greenvale and Macari vineyards. The Macari family and Greenville Estate have both been growing Chardonnay grapes for four decades. Rumford, Rhode Island craft winery Anchor & Hope pulls the two islands grapes together for a big bodied wine with a shake of sea salt and splash of tropical fruit. It also comes in a 250ml can for beach days, barbecues and Taylor Swift tailgating.Macari Vineyards 2020 Be...Milk Street stirs up a bounty of dishes with ‘Noodles’ cookbook

Noodle dishes are a menu standard in homes, restaurants and food stalls from Japan to China to Italy to Peru.Often made with easy-to-find, everyday ingredients, they’re both wonderfully economical and oh-so versatile: They can be tossed in tomato sauce or pesto for a taste of Italy, simmered in broth with meat, tofu or veggies for an Asian-style soup, or tossed in a pot with seafood or cheese for a one-pan meal.Noodles also make for great stir-fry, as Milk Street’s terrific new cookbook, “Noodles,” makes abundantly clear. From fast and saucy dishes such as shrimp with orzo and tomatoes to noodle soups, Japanese macaroni salad and Italian pastas, Christopher Kimble and his team travel the globe to gather recipes you can’t wait to slurp from a bowl or twist on a fork. One that immediately caught my eye was a stir-fry combining thinly sliced flank steak with broccolini and rice stick noodles in a soy-garlic sauce. I don’t buy a lot of meat these days ...Dear Abby: Cheating ex a drain on man’s life, $$

Dear Abby: My wife and I were married 21 years ago. Since then, she has admitted to cheating with 10 different men. Each time, I stayed with her, hoping she’d change. I finally left 3 1/2 years ago because I couldn’t take it anymore. She became homeless, but for the past year and a half she has been living with my daughter and me because I saw her on the street one day and she looked terrible. We are now moving, and my daughter wants her mother to get a job (she’s capable of getting one). My ex refused to get one to help pay the bills. Now I’m faced with another dilemma: Should I let her go on her own or fight for her to stay with us? My daughter is completely against her living with us. My income is limited. I’m on disability for a bad heart. My ex is 43, and I’m 58. Can you please advise? — Not Looking Back in ColoradoDear Not Looking Back: Your daughter is right. You are disabled and on a limited income, and your ex-wife is able-bodied. FALLBROOK, Calif. -- The San Diego County Sheriff's Department deputy involved in a shooting last week in the Fallbrook area has been identified, authorities said.Evan McCormick, a patrol deputy from the Fallbrook Substation, fired his department-issued rifle multiple times at the suspect who was armed with a scope rifle while making his way toward law enforcement, Lt. Adam Sharki with the San Diego Police Department said in a release Tuesday. McCormick's been with the department for about 15 years. The incident occurred Friday around 1 a.m. in the 4900 block of White Lilac Road in Fallbrook. Police said the sheriff's department responded to a call from a woman who reported her husband, identified as 41-year-old Jorge Alberto Sandoval, was despondent and made suicidal threats. According to authorities, the woman said she hid a firearm from her husband after he threatened to kill himself with it. BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Asa Hutchinson, the former two-term Republican governor of Arkansas, will formally launch his campaign for president Wednesday with a kickoff in his hometown of Bentonville. The stalwart conservative, who announced in a television interview earlier this month that he intended to run, is a former congressman and official in President George W. Bush’s administration.Hutchinson has been a rare figure among announced or expected GOP presidential hopefuls in his willingness to criticize former President Donald Trump, calling for him to drop out of the 2024 race instead of seeking another term in the White House. The 72-year-old has said Trump should step aside because his legal troubles, including criminal charges in New York, are a distraction. And while Trump has fixated his campaign messages around his false claims about the 2020 election he lost, Hutchinson has said voters need a candidate who is not focused on the past.Former U.N. WASHINGTON (AP) — Geraldine Tyler, now 94, lost her one-bedroom condo in Minneapolis over $2,300 in unpaid taxes, plus interest and penalties. Hennepin County sold the apartment for $40,000 and kept every penny.Tyler’s lawyers say the county violated constitutional protections against having property taken without “just compensation” and excessive fines. The Supreme Court, which hears arguments Wednesday, will decide.Minnesota is among roughly a dozen states and the District of Columbia that allow local jurisdictions to keep the excess money, according to the Pacific Legal Foundation, which is representing Tyler at the Supreme Court. At least 8,950 homes were sold because of unpaid taxes and the former owners received little or nothing in those states between 2014 and 2021, according to Pacific Legal, a not-for-profit public interest law firm focused on property rights.Other states are: Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York,...2024 race won’t be like 2020. That’s good and bad for Biden

WASHINGTON (AP) — No honking geese are likely to interrupt his speeches this time.As President Joe Biden seeks a second term, he won’t have to depend on glitchy Zoom connections, or deliver remarks in largely vacant theaters with attendees in chairs ringed by circle markings on the floor to ensure enough social distancing. His advisors won’t scrutinize the 1918 flu outbreak for clues on pandemic-era voting. With the country increasingly back to normal, Biden can fly to crowded campaign events on Air Force One, make policy announcements from the Rose Garden and shape not only the presidential race but global affairs with his actions.Just as the 2024 campaign will be vastly different from the coronavirus-marred 2020 edition, Biden won’t be able to hold on to the White House by running in the same way he won it three years ago. Virtual events offered from a basement rec room he converted into a studio in his Delaware home and avoiding travel for months at a stretch wo...In a growing India, some struggle to prove they are Indians

MURKATA, India (AP) — Krishna Biswas is scared. Unable to prove his Indian citizenship, he is at risk of being sent to a detention center, far away from his modest hut built of bamboo wood that looks down on fields lush with corn.Biswas says he was born in India’s northeastern Assam state. So was his father, almost 65 years ago. But the government says that to prove he is an Indian, he should furnish documents that date back to 1971.For the 37-year-old vegetable seller, that means searching for a decades-old property deed or a birth certificate with an ancestor’s name on it.Biswas has none, and he is not alone. There are nearly 2 million people like him — over 5% of Assam’s population — staring at a future where they could be stripped of their citizenship if they are unable to prove they are Indian.Questions over who is an Indian have long lingered over Assam, which many believe is overrun with immigrants from neighboring Bangladesh. At a time when India is about to overtake C...Latest news
