Can California’s coastline be saved? Study shows up to 70% could be wiped out by 2100

In the not too distant future, California’s coastline and its iconic beaches could be washed away, leaving only cliffs behind.A new study found from 25% to 70% of California’s beaches could erode by 2100 due to rising sea levels caused by global temperature increases and greenhouse gas emissions.Substantial management efforts like dune restoration are necessary to maintain the beaches and prevent catastrophic erosion, the authors of the study said.“Beaches are perhaps the most iconic feature of California, and the potential for losing this identity is real,” wrote Sean Vitousek, the lead researcher. “Losing the protecting swath of beach sand between us and the pounding surf exposes critical infrastructure, businesses and homes to damage. Beaches are natural resources, and it is likely that human-management efforts must increase in order to preserve them.”The U.S. States Geological Survey used two decades worth of satellite imagery of Ocean Beach in San Francisco — combined wit...

Now scientists are hoping that the scientifically significant tooth will be returned to the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History where it can be studied and displayed for the public as a piece of ancient history. The 1-foot-long tooth was originally spotted by a beach-goer strolling through the sand near Aptos Creek on Rio Del Mar Beach. "She didn't know what it was, the importance of it. It looks like a piece of old firewood. So she left it there. And it is certainly not about bargains. It is about remembering. Elizabeth Trujillo remembers Mario Martinez.“My dad‘s baby brother. I think he was in his first year in Vietnam. But he was only nineteen and stepped on a landline,“ said Martinez.Nicholas Trujillo remembers his older brother Thomas Ortiz who served in Vietnam.“He was an older brother. Well, he was a linesman. He was a private first class, of course, he used to run up wooden poles and run a line. One of his gaffes was he slipped and got a piece of splinter going inside his throat. And got Agent Orange out of all that,“ said Trujillo. After returning to the United States, Thomas Ortiz passed away. Memorial dedication for fallen soldiers Bob Fajardo remembers fellow shipma...
