A Pakistani court delays ruling on ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan’s conviction appeal ISLAMABAD (AP) — A court in Pakistan’s capital delayed for a day a crucial ruling that was expected Thursday on an appeal from the country’s imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan against his recent conviction and three-year sentence in a graft case, one of his lawyers said. The Islamabad High Court will resume hearings on Khan’s appeal on Friday, his attorneys said. The former cricket star and top opposition leader was found guilty of concealing assets after selling state gifts he received while in office and was convicted and sentenced on Aug. 5 by another court. Khan, through his legal team, requested his release, saying the trial court sentenced him in haste. The 70-year-old Khan, who was ousted in a no-confidence vote in April 2022, is currently being held at a high-security Attock prison in eastern Punjab province. Even if Khan’s conviction is set aside, his release is unlikely as other courts have canceled his bail in multiple cases. He has denied the charges of cor...

Hospital services in the UK come to a standstill as thousands of senior doctors strike again LONDON (AP) — Hospital care across England is expected to come to a standstill on Thursday as senior doctors launch another 48-hour strike amid an ongoing pay dispute between medics and the British government. Thousands of hospital doctors say they will only provide emergency care, and the National Health Service warned patients to expect major disruption during the two-day strike.Thursday’s action is the latest in a series of strikes staged by doctors, nurses and other clinical staff in recent months and part of a wave of disruptive industrial action by public sector workers to demand better pay amid the U.K.’s cost-of-living crisis.Julian Hartley, chief executive of NHS Providers, said the latest walkouts are a “massive headache” for the public health service because they are timed just before the late August three-day public holiday weekend, when demand at hospital emergency departments is typically higher. That means many services will in effect be out of action for ...

International Institute of Minnesota cancels Festival of Nations — permanently Kitty Gogins began attending the Festival of Nations as an infant, when her parents, both Hungarian refugees, joined in the planning and pageantry around St. Paul’s signature celebration of the state’s many immigrant traditions. As a teen she embraced and showcased her family’s culture by participating in Hungarian dancing at the festival. And as an adult, she introduced the festival and its food vendors to her own children, who were happy to see the tradition — which launched in 1932 as a street fair — continue even as the annual four-day gathering moved indoors to the city’s downtown RiverCentre. But as chair of the International Institute of Minnesota’s festival committee, Gogins recently came to a different conclusion entirely, one she calls little short of heartbreaking.Following years of soul searching and financial review, the board of the St. Paul-based institute voted this summer to cancel the Festival of Nations permanently. The deci...
