When in Rome, do as the Romans do.And that is to ship illegal immigrants someplace else.Gov. Maura Healey should take notice. In Italy’s case it is to send them across the Adriatic Sea to Albania where they will be held until they are processed and potentially sent back to where they came from. And that place is Libya, where fortunes are made sending immigrants from Africa and the Mideast who have flocked there seeking sea passage to Italy. Once there they pay smugglers to ferry them on often rickety boats across the Mediterranean Sea to Italy.Italy, like the rest of Europe—not to mention the United States—has been overwhelmed with illegal immigrants. Unlike the U.S., however, European countries have begun to crack down on illegal immigration.Once in Italy, a gateway to the rest of Europe, the illegal immigrants, under European Union regulations, are safe from immediate deportation and are allowed to apply for asylum. Italy is a member of the European Union. So, under the conservative ...Could Justin Turner return? Five Red Sox storylines as Winter Meetings begin

NASHVILLE — The Winter Meetings are officially underway, and over the next few days we should see a flurry of activity that will shape the game’s competitive landscape for years to come. The Red Sox are expected to be active players and have a lot to get done, but while a blockbuster on the order of signing Shohei Ohtani is unlikely, there’s plenty more to watch for. Here are five Red Sox storylines to follow as the action heats up in Nashville.Where will Turner land?Justin Turner was arguably Boston’s most valuable player last season, greatly exceeding expectations at the plate while immediately establishing himself as an indispensable clubhouse leader. The Red Sox would love to have him back, but as a 39-year-old designated hitter who would limit Boston’s positional versatility, he also presents drawbacks the club must consider. Will he end up re-signing? If so he’ll shore up the lineup and provide some clarity for how the team could look going forward,...Global Affairs confirms Canadian death in Lebanon, 8th since Israel-Hamas war began

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Human rights lawyers went to court in the Netherlands on Monday to call for a halt to the export of fighter jet parts to Israel that could be used in attacks on Gaza. The organizations allege that delivery of parts for F-35 jets makes the Netherlands complicit in possible war crimes being committed by Israel in its war with Hamas. The civil case in The Hague opened as the Israeli military renewed calls for mass evacuations from the southern town of Khan Younis, where tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians have sought refuge in recent weeks, as it widened its ground offensive and bombarded targets across the Gaza Strip. The rights lawyers want The Hague District Court to issue an injunction banning the exports of F-35 parts that are stored in a warehouse in the town of Woensdrecht.“The state must immediately stop the delivery of F-35 parts to Israel,” lawyer Liesbeth Zegveld told the court.Citing government documents, Zegveld said that Dutch customs a...Spotify axes 17% of workforce in third round of layoffs this year

LONDON (AP) — Spotify says it’s axing 17% of its global workforce, the music streaming service’s third round of layoffs this year as it moves to slash costs while focusing on becoming profitable. In a message to employees posted on the company’s blog Monday, CEO Daniel Ek said the jobs were being cut as part of a “strategic reorientation.” The post didn’t specify how many employees would lose their jobs, but a spokesperson confirmed that it amounts to about 1,500 people. Spotify had used cheap financing to expand the business and “invested significantly” in employees, content and marketing in 2020 and 2021, the blog post said. But Ek indicated that the company was caught out as central banks started hiking interest rates last year. “We now find ourselves in a very different environment. And despite our efforts to reduce costs this past year, our cost structure for where we need to be is still too big,” he said. Ek said the “leaner structure” of the company wi...North Korea accuses US of double standards for letting South Korea launch spy satellite from US soil

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea on Monday accused the United States of double standards, slamming it for letting rival South Korea launch a spy satellite from U.S. territory after condemning the North’s earlier satellite launch.Last Friday, South Korea launched its first domestically built spy satellite into space from California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base. That came after North Korea put its own military spy satellite into orbit for the first time on Nov. 21.Unlike the South Korean launch, North Korea’s satellite liftoff drew immediate, strong rebukes from Washington, Seoul and their partners because it violated U.N. Security Council resolutions. The world body views any North Korean launch using ballistic technology as a cover for testing its missile technology. North Korea maintains it has the right to launch satellites and test missiles in the face of what it calls U.S.-led military threats.“It is a space-level tragicomedy that the U.S., going frantic with illegal denun...Oxford University Press has named ‘rizz’ as its word of the year
