Cocaine worth nearly $440 million found floating in the sea off Italy (CNN) — A huge consignment of cocaine has been found floating off the eastern coast of the island of Sicily, Italian police said.According to a statement released on Monday by Italy’s Financial Police, Guardia di Finanza, authorities seized nearly 2 tons of the drugs, spotted floating in the Mediterranean during a routine surveillance flight on Sunday. The drugs were carefully sealed in 70 waterproof floating packages, which were connected and included a signaling light device, police said. They added that the haul has a street value of €400 million (nearly $440 million).“The identification and subsequent seizure of this quantity of drugs, one of the largest ever carried out in the national territory, likely prevented the drug from being recovered by criminals for subsequent illegal sale in the national territory, which would have yielded very high earnings,” the statement read.Guardia di Finanza said they believe the floating packages were left by a passing c...

French lawmakers challenge Olympics surveillance before top court PARIS — French left-leaning lawmakers from the Greens and France Unbowed have officially challenged the AI-powered surveillance system for the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics before the country’s top constitutional court, they announced Monday. “This bill violates several principles of constitutional value since it disregards the right to privacy, the principle of necessity and individualization of penalties … or the principle of safeguarding human dignity,” they wrote, mentioning algorithmic video surveillance, among other issues. The French parliament earlier this month adopted a controversial bill that allows the experimentation of large-scale, real-time camera systems supported by algorithms to spot suspicious behavior — including unsupervised luggage and crowd movements like stampedes — for the Olympics next year. The system would be in place until March 2025. Presented by the government, the legislation has met criticism and opposition from digital...

All eyes now on Giannis Antetokounmpo’s bruised back in Heat-Bucks It might not have appeared that way Sunday, but the Milwaukee Bucks have already shown this season they can have their way with the Miami Heat even when Giannis Antetokounmpo is not fully healthy. That is especially meaningful at the moment with the Bucks All-Star forward dealing with a back contusion and Milwaukee down 1-0 to Heat in this best-of-seven Eastern Conference opening round NBA playoff series that continues Wednesday at 9 p.m. at Fiserv Forum. On March 24, despite Antetokounmpo being lost 6:28 into the game due to a knee injury, the Bucks throttled the Heat 128-99.Now, after falling 130-117 Sunday to the Heat, it may have to again be Antetokounmpo’s supporting cast stepping forward in a similar fashion. With 1:46 left in Sunday’s first quarter, Antetokounmpo landed hard on his back after being called for a charging foul, with Heat forward Kevin Love absorbing the brunt of the hit. Antetokounmpo left the game at that stage, heading immediately to the locker room....

US, allies stage drills as N. Korea warns of security crisis SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The United States, South Korea and Japan conducted a joint missile defense exercise on Monday aimed at countering North Korea’s growing nuclear arsenal, as a top North Korean army official warned the U.S. that it risks “a clearer security crisis and insurmountable threats.”Last week, North Korea conducted one of its most provocative weapons demonstrations in years by flight-testing for the first time an intercontinental ballistic missile powered by solid fuel. It is considered a more mobile, harder-to-detect weapon and could directly target the continental United States. South Korea’s navy said Monday’s three-way drills took place in international waters off the country’s eastern coast and focused on mastering procedures for detecting, tracking and sharing information on incoming North Korean ballistic missiles. The one-day naval exercise involved an Aegis destroyer from each country. “The drills’ goal is to improve our response capabilities against ballist...
