Liz Cheney urges Colorado College graduates not to compromise with the truth in commencement speech Former U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney implored new college graduates to not compromise when it comes to the truth, excoriating her House Republican colleagues for not doing enough to combat former President Donald Trump’s lies that the 2020 election was stolen. In a commencement speech at Colorado College, the Wyoming Republican repeated her fierce criticisms of Trump but steered clear of talking about his 2024 reelection campaign or her own political future.Cheney, who graduated from Colorado College in 1988, recalled being a political science student walking into a campus building where a Bible verse was inscribed above the entrance that read, “Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.”“After the 2020 election and the attack of January 6th, my fellow Republicans wanted me to lie. They wanted me to say the 2020 election was stolen, the attack of January 6th wasn’t a big deal, and Donald Trump wasn’t dangerous,” Cheney said Sunday in Colorado Springs, connecting her experience...

Weeknight dishes: Cheese croutons, bulgogi burgers and crispy rice By Emily Weinstein, The New York TimesWeeknight recipes are the dishes you can make at the end of a long day when you don’t have much time or energy, but still want something good to eat. All of this week’s selections work for Memorial Day weekend gatherings, in addition to the days that follow.Stovetop Barbecue ChickenStovetop barbecue chicken, in New York, April 20, 2023. Smoked paprika in the sauce hints at the flavor you would get from the grill. Food Stylist: Simon Andrews. (David Malosh, The New York Times)Nothing compares to live fire, but even if you don’t have a grill, you can make chicken that’s burnished and sticky with barbecue sauce. To achieve a similar smokiness on the stovetop, paint boneless, skinless chicken with some barbecue sauce and sear it so the sugars in the sauce caramelize and char. The sauce here leans tangy and spicy, but adjust it as you like. Once the chicken is cooked, let the sauce bubble until glossy enough to slather onto the chicken.By Ali SlagleY...

The Little Mermaid Finds a New Voice in Remake

Published Sun, 24 Nov 2024 07:27:16 GMT

The Little Mermaid Finds a New Voice in Remake In 1989, Disney’s The Little Mermaid ushered in a new age for animation by taking audiences under the sea to a magical subaquatic world of mermaids, handsome princes, and sinister sea witches set to the glorious tunes of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman. The story of a feisty mermaid driven by her love for a human to make a deal with a sea witch not only revitalized Disney as a studio, but created a new type of princess for young girls to idolize and set the standard for modern animation. It was a game changer. And now several decades later, Disney hopes to cast a similar spell with a live-action version of the animated masterwork. But does it sink or swim? While the latest The Little Mermaid, updated with inclusive casting, follows the story of the animated classic fairly well, it misses enough small nuances so that much of the charm is left by the wayside. Ariel’s fiery nature, Sebastian’s humorous frustration and Chef Louis’ hilarious “Les Poissons” are gone but not forgotten. Directo...

Consumer seafood guide advises people to avoid Chesapeake Bay oysters. But why?

Published Sun, 24 Nov 2024 07:27:16 GMT

Consumer seafood guide advises people to avoid Chesapeake Bay oysters. But why? The Chesapeake Bay oyster population has been flourishing over the last few years, but a California based seafood guide disagrees. Seafood Watch, a well-known consumer guide about sustainable seafood, has released its latest draft and is telling people to avoid eating wild caught oysters that come from the Bay.A look at the draft shows the bay as being overfished and poorly managed, adding “current abundance levels in the Chesapeake Bay overall are still low. As a result, Seafood Watch deems eastern oyster abundance in Virginia as a ‘high’ concern.”WTOP has reached out to the organization behind the report for comment. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is behind the guide, but declined a request for comment from the Bay Journal about the rating, saying the draft assessment may change, depending on public comment. The public comment period ended last week. The findings have led to some criticism from the local industry. The University of Maryland Center for Environmental...
