Md. first lady has lived with MS for 20 years — what is it? Maryland first lady Dawn Moore recently revealed something very personal to the world. For more than 20 years, she has lived with multiple sclerosis or MS.Her announcement comes during Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month, and she said she is opening up about it to do just that — raise awareness.MS is a neurological condition in which your body’s immune system, at times, will attack the myelin that protects a person’s nerves. That protective layer for the nerves comes under fire during what is known as “attacks” or “exacerbations.”What’s unique about MS is that symptoms can vary widely, from vision issues, weakness, numbness, coordination problems and bladder issues. And it can even affect a person’s mood, according to Dr. Robert Shin, a neurologist at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. When the body attacks the protective layer around the nerves, it leaves damage that the body cannot heal. So, the nerve communication issues caused by that damage can lead to symptoms, can go away ...

Paralyzed cat duo looking for forever home DENVER (KDVR) -- Two paralyzed cats at a Denver non-profit are looking for a forever home.  Kelly and Guapo have been at the MaxFund Animal Adoption Center for several years. They both came in as strays at separate times but quickly became best friends. Katie Cooke, who has been taking care of Kelly and Guapo for about four years at the shelter, said the duo is inseparable. “These are brothers in arms," Cooke said. “They just have been through so much together and it’s amazing to see how close they are and just how much fun they are. They’re my favs.” Kelly and Guapo are paralyzed from the waist down, so they use their front paws to get around. Volunteers at the shelter say the two are fast when they want to be. (KDVR)"They have no idea that they’re paralyzed. They think they’re on all fours,” Cooke said. “They’re so confident. They act as if there is no problem with them and what they’re going through is normal.” Shelly Raber, a volunteer, said th...

Lowry: Kids facing transgender peer pressure

Lowry: Kids facing transgender peer pressure We are going to look back years from now and wonder how we failed young girls so badly.Between social media and fashionable gender theories, we are making teenage girls depressed, anxious, and trans. In a Substack essay the other day, a mother wrote of her daughter: “She was among the last of her small group of biologically female friends to socially transition. It was mid-pandemic, and she spent most of her time with her best friend, who had, unbeknownst to me, shown her hours upon end of transgender entertainment on YouTube and TikTok.”Of course, that is going to have an effect, although there is a massive effort to deny it among trans activists and in much of the media. The Geico gecko can convince us to buy car insurance. Someone can use the wrong pronoun and it can convince a trans person to harm himself or herself. But what can’t possibly happen, we are supposed to believe, is that the constant discussion and celebration of transgenderism might convince confuse...

Moore: Honey, Joe Biden just shrunk our pension

Published Sun, 24 Nov 2024 08:50:19 GMT

Moore: Honey, Joe Biden just shrunk our pension President Joe Biden recently issued his first veto since taking office on Jan. 20, 2021.Biden rejected a bipartisan bill that would have required investment fund managers to take politics out of their investment decisions and to stay focused on providing the best return to their clients as much as possible. Why should you care? Because Biden was, in effect, saying it was permissible for fund managers, who have control of trillions of dollars in pension accounts, to take into consideration a company’s ESG score (related to how it stands on racial justice, climate change and LGBT issues) when they decide where to invest the money.Workers and retirees are angry about this decision — as they should be. ESG is effectively a tax on your retirement funds, and it means you will have a smaller nest egg when you retire than if the money managers simply bought the top-performing stocks. Workers don’t want politics diluting the returns on their 401(k) plans and other pension accounts...

Perfect matzah balls stand out on Passover table

Published Sun, 24 Nov 2024 08:50:19 GMT

Perfect matzah balls stand out on Passover table Passover is a Jewish celebration and one of the religion’s most sacred and widely observed holidays. Passover commemorates the Biblical story of the Israelites’ escape from 400 years of slavery in Egypt. In 2023, Passover takes place April 5-15. Pesach, as Passover is known in Hebrew, includes all kinds of ceremonial foods. The Passover seder plate showcases specific items that relate to both the suffering and emancipation of the Jewish people. Throughout Passover, the faithful abstain from any leavened bread products. According to Exodus 12:8: “They shall eat the flesh that night, roasted on the fire; with unleavened bread and bitter herbs they shall eat.” Jews also are to remove all leaven (hametz) from their homes and eat unleavened bread for an additional seven days.Apart from being commanded by God, it is believed unleavened bread became traditional Passover food because the Jewish people departed Egypt in haste without time to let bread rise. Furthermore...

Editorial: We’re not out of the woods in preventing food crisis Remember last year’s infant formula shortage? Supply chain issues coincided with a large scale product recall, which led to empty shelves and parents desperate seeking alternative suppliers to feed their babies. They turned to food banks, friends, friends of friends, the internet – whoever might have spare formula. Those dark days could easily return, said a former FDA official.“The nation remains one outbreak, one tornado, flood or cyberattack away from finding itself in a similar place to that of February 17, 2022,” said Frank Yiannas, who served as the FDA’s deputy commissioner for food policy and response for four years before resigning in January. As The Hill reported, Yiannas testified before the House Subcommittee on Health Care and Financial Services to discuss the causes of the infant formula shortage and how to prevent it from repeating. He said he did not believe the infant formula industry has changed much in the year since the recall on products was issue...

Raise a glass to bounty from N.E. distilleries

Raise a glass to bounty from N.E. distilleries New England is at the center of the craft distillery revolution. A decade ago, homegrown vodkas and whiskeys were a rare find. Now you can make your favorite classic cocktails by shopping locally. So let’s do that.I took a deep dive into a dozen standout spirits from around New England to make batches of no-frills classics (and added a couple frills when called for). Combine these bottles of booze with your favorite recipes – unless noted, I mixed up these cocktails using standard recipes.GlenPharmer Bog CosmopolitanGlenPharmer’s cleverly titled cranberry vodka, Bog, may spur a new Cosmo craze. The drink most often associated with “Sex in the City” may actually have Cape Cod roots – popular myth links the tasty, tart creation to Provincetown and the Cape Codder cocktail. GlenPharmer only enhances the Mass. connection by using cranberries from Decas Farm in Carver to make Bog. Use the flavored vodka in place of citron vodka and cranberry juice in your favorite Cosmo recipe for a drin...
