Three suspected gang members were charged with murder Friday in the fatal shooting of a 5-year-old girl while she rode in a car with her parents on Interstate 880 in Fremont — a case that may further test the public’s response to progressive charging and sentencing reforms championed by Alameda County’s district attorney. The charges announced by Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price in the April 8 death of Eliyanah Crisostomo, 5, of Santa Clara may draw attention for what is not included: any potential sentencing enhancements, additional allegations that could extend potential prison terms by years or decades if the defendants are convicted. A gang enhancement to the murder charge was included for each suspect when they were booked by the California Highway Patrol. The suspects were identified in jail records as Humberto Anaya, 29, Emmanuel Sarango, 27, and Kristo Ayala, 25. The charges announced by the district attorney’s office Friday included murder, assa...Former Sen. Barbara Boxer to Feinstein: “I would call the people who love me … and make a decision”

When Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein were first elected U.S. senators from California in 1992 — a historic victory for women — Feinstein sat Boxer down and told her, “You’ve got to stick with this. The longer you stay, the better you’ll feel, the more you’ll get done.”Boxer took the advice to heart and stayed in office 24 years before retiring in 2017.“She was right. There’s no question about it,” Boxer told the Bay Area News Group on Friday. “But having said that, you’ve got to be able to do the job.”Feinstein has been unable to do that job for the past two months as the 89-year-old and oldest member of the U.S. Senate slowly recovers from shingles. She has missed more than 60 votes so far this year, leading a number of her fellow Democrats to call for her resignation, including Bay Area Congressmember Ro Khanna.Although Boxer said it’s Feinstein’s decision, she said she has reached out to those close to the ailing senator and made it clear that if she were in Feinst...Coyotes’ André Tourigny to coach Canada in world hockey

BOSTON (AP) — Two-time Olympic gold medalist. Twelve-time major marathon winner. World record-holder. And still, Eliud Kipchoge has something to prove.“I think Boston is a game-changer for me,” the world’s greatest marathoner said as he prepared for his debut in the world’s most prestigious road race. “Boston is the oldest marathon ever, and I think actually any serious marathoner should put his or her own feet once — if not a lot in his life — in the Boston streets.”A 38-year-old Kenyan who has been collecting marathon victories since 2013, Kipchoge will make his Boston Marathon debut on Monday in the 127th edition of the world’s longest-running long run. A victory would give him wins in an unprecedented five of the six major marathons. Kipchoge also has run the two fastest marathons ever — and four of the top six — breaking his own world record in September at Berlin with a time of 2 hours, 1 minute, 9 seconds. CLEVELAND (AP) — The New York Knicks couldn’t land Donovan Mitchell last summer. They’re getting him now. Just not in the way they hoped.Mitchell, in his first season with Cleveland, has pushed the Cavs back into the NBA playoffs for the first time since LeBron James split in 2018 and will face his hometown team in a first-round series loaded with subplots. The juiciest, of course, is Mitchell’s connection to the Knicks, who were on the verge of acquiring him in an offseason trade before the deal collapsed, the Cavs swooped in, and the rest, as they say, is history. On the eve of facing the Knicks, the native New Yorker appreciated how the matchup has a preordained vibe.“Full-circle moment.” Mitchell said Friday as the Cavs wrapped up practice ahead of Saturday’s series opener at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. “This year has been full of full-circle moments for me.”The four-time All-Star guard has quickly transformed the young Cavs, who made the play-in tournament ...Residents’ next step after historic floods: dealing with insurance

Historic flooding in South Florida is bringing headaches for homeowners in more ways than one. Replacing anything that’s damaged is bad enough, and filing an insurance claim may only add to the frustration. The water is slowly receding but still deep in parts of Broward County, as people carry their belongings out in trash bags.It is still so bad that a 7News crew had to go in on a mud buggy to reach homeowner Javier Cabrera.“The water came up to that line,” he said.Cabrera said he was in Boston on business when he looked at his security cameras and saw the devastation.“It was stopping here and didn’t move,” he noted. Both of his cars and home were completely flooded.Asked if he had insurance for the contents of his home, Cabrera responded, “I don’t have content [coverage] because I was not expecting something like this.”Many of these homeowners are down and tired. Fighting insurance companies is the last thing they want to do.R...7NEWS team members assist with One Boston Day beautification project at Martin’s Park in Boston
