Charley Walters: Only pitchers will make up Twins’ all-star contingent

It’s a good bet that no position players will represent the Minnesota Twins in the All-Star Game in Seattle on July 11. At least one pitcher would seem to be the first-place team’s representative from among Sonny Gray, Jhoan Duran or Joe Ryan.Gray (4-0) has baseball’s second-best earned-run average (1.94). No doubt the majors would like to showcase a guy, Duran, with a fastball that has reached 104.6-mph this season. And Ryan is 7-2.— Besides Justin Jefferson’s anticipated $150 million contract extension, the biggest issues for the Vikings now are a new deal for Danielle Hunter that could triple his $5 million salary for next season and trying to find a trading partner for Dalvin Cook, even if it’s a late-round draft pick.— Insiders say the Gophers halted recruitment of Bloomington Jefferson point guard Daniel Freitag, who is headed to Wisconsin, last March after they received a commitment from junior point guard Isaac Asuma of tiny Cherry High School near Duluth.— The Twins’ Byron ...St. Paul man killed in single car crash on MN 280 early Saturday

Pride 2023 is here, and while LA Pride and Christopher Street West left West Hollywood last year (after the pandemic forced cancellations and majorly downsized events in 2020 and 2021), West Hollywood has by no means laid low. How could they? The City of West Hollywood remains the epicenter for gay nightlife and small businesses, and it’s still the most active and high profile neighborhood we have in terms of LGBTQ+ issues and political freedoms in general– from drag to cannabis. Dubbed the “Rainbow District,” Santa Monica Boulevard will always be loud and proud. Since joining forces with OUTLOUD and JJLA events last year, WeHo Pride is louder than ever. For Pride 2023 they offer another stellar show with the legendary Grace Jones, plus Carly Rae Jepson, Orville Peck and many more. Beyond live music there’s plenty more happening, too. Here’s our picks for what to know and where to go this weekend. Q: The column about merging reminded me that merging into highway traffic has been a point of frustration for me since I got to California 40-plus years ago.Ohio signage is clearer that ongoing traffic has the right of way in a merge situation. Incoming traffic is given a road sign that says “yield.” Not everyone here understands who has the right of way, and I have seen plenty of occasions when the yielder thought it was an on-the-spot negotiation. The lack of signs only reinforces that.As long as I am writing, I might as well mention another pet peeve: I think the DMV written/computer test you take when renewing a license should be on questions that show you know the most important things to be a safe driver, such as who has the right of way when two lanes merge. Instead, the last two times I took the test, I answered questions about axles (I am a little vague on what these are anyway, but my driving is not impaired by my axle knowledge) and what the fine is for throwing an animal...4.4-magnitude quake strikes 13 miles from Healdsburg

What to gift the man who is barred from receiving anything, and also is Vladimir Putin’s biggest political foe?How about a mass demonstration? That’s what supporters of Alexei Navalny are ginning up for the jailed Russian opposition leader’s 47th birthday on Sunday. From exile, they are calling Russians to action, both inside and outside the country.“Let’s show him on his birthday that he has not been forgotten,” Georgy Alburov, who works for Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK), said in a YouTube video posted in mid-May. “Wherever you are, whichever country, go out to support Navalny.”Sunday marks the third birthday that Navalny will spend in prison since he was arrested after recovering from a poison attack, which his team says was carried out on Russian President Putin’s direct orders.“Putin wants Navalny to feel alone. Moreover, he wants every single one of us to feel that way,” Lyubov Sobol, another Navalny associate, said in the video calling for protests. The Navalny...Latest news
