Berkeley to resume housing development at People's Park BERKELEY, Calif. (KRON) -- The California State Assembly has approved a bill that allows the City of Berkeley to continue its housing construction at People's Park. This bill approval amends the California Environmental Quality Act of 1970 which prevented construction on projects that did not study a potential for noise pollution generated from future residents after they move into the area.According to the State Assembly, UC Berkeley currently provides housing for only 23 percent of its students, which is the lowest rate in the University of California system. Officer fired for shooting and killing Sean Monterrosa has termination overturned The new building would house more than 1,100 students in a 148-unit apartment building. The construction will also allow the university to build a separate unit that will house over 60 homeless people who currently sleep at the park.“This is a victory for affordable housing and that means it’s a victory in our ongoing efforts to tack...

Best Buy and the reluctant shopper. Sales fall as Americans pull back on spending NEW YORK (AP) — Sales and profits at Best Buy slid in the second quarter as the nation’s largest consumer electronics chain continues to wrestle with a pullback in spending after Americans splurged during the pandemic. The decline in sales was smaller than what Wall Street had anticipated, however, and profits were better than expected, sending shares higher in early trading. The U.S. job market has remained resilient, but Americans are facing higher prices and more expensive credit with the Federal Reserve hiking benchmark interest rates to combat inflation. It’s more expensive to take out loans for appliances, cars and houses, or to use a credit card. As a result, consumers have become reluctant to spend unless there is a sale. They’re being more selective with what they will buy and, in many cases, trading down to buy cheaper stuff.Retailers including Best Buy are also now bracing for the impact from the ending of the student loan moratorium, which had provided one-tim...
