MEXICO CITY (AP) — A third-party candidate announced Saturday he is leaving Mexico’s 2024 presidential race, practically ensuring the country ’s next president will be a woman. Samuel García, the governor of the northern border state of Nuevo Leon, said Saturday he won’t run for president in the June 2 elections. He had been polling below 10% in the race, and was given almost no chance of actually winning. That leaves only the ruling Morena party and the opposition coalition’s candidates, both of whom are women. While García’s small Citizen’s Movement party could yet nominate another male candidate, García’s troubled exit suggests the party won’t be able to find anyone of much stature to run.Gov. García’s decision came after one of the wilder chapters in Mexican politics. On Friday, the border state across from Texas briefly saw two interim governors designated to replace García, who had asked for a six-month leave of absence to campaign for president. M...

Bonnie Crombie is the new leader of the Ontario Liberal Party but it wasn’t the cakewalk many anticipated. The Mississauga mayor needed three ballots to defeat Liberal MP Nate Erskine-Smith in the race to replace Steven Del Duca, who resigned after last year’s provincial election.Despite being the clear leader after the first ballot Crombie fell 912 points shy of winning outright, sending the race to a second ballot. On the second ballot, Crombie picked up 488 points to put her within a stone’s throw of winning it all while Erskine-Smith gained 472 points and Liberal MP and former provincial cabinet minister Yasir Naqvi finished third after collecting just 341 points, dropping him off the ballot for the final round. In the end, Crombie finished with 6,911 points while Erskine-Smith ended with 6,029.Erskine-Smith and Naqvi had previously reached an agreement to endorse each other as second choices, though their supporters were not obligated to rank them that way.Former Liber...

I did not intend for my words to sow further division, for which I am sincerely apologetic.”On the The Back Room with Andy Ostroy podcast last Monday, Margulies claimed that Black people have been “brainwashed to hate Jews” and that a Black lesbian club at Columbia University put signs up saying “No Jews all...

Texas groups say new EPA rule will sharply reduce methane emissions in the state

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Environmental Protection Agency finalized Saturday a rule that it says will sharply reduce the amount of methane and other harmful air pollutants emitted by the oil and natural gas industry. The EPA said the new rule promotes the latest cost-effective and innovative technologies that will prevent an estimated 58 million metric tons of methane emissions over the next 15 years. The organization said in the year 2030 alone, the expected reduction will be equal to 130 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, which is more than the annual emissions from 28 million gasoline cars.Methane is considered a climate "super pollutant," as it is more potent than carbon dioxide and contributes to about one third of the warming from greenhouse gases. The EPA said cutting back methane emission is "critical" to slowing the rate of climate change. Some Texas organizations said after the EPA announcement Saturday that the finalized rule is "a major win for the climate and public healt...

Gophers football: Freshman phenom Darius Taylor decides to stay at the U

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 08:55:53 GMT

In the NCAA transfer portal era, college football players staying at the same program can be as newsworthy as those who decide to leave. On Saturday, true freshman running back Darius Taylor said he would remain with the Gophers for the 2024 season. Given the precocious start to his collegiate career and the poaching that can occur from big, deeper-pocketed programs, this represents a big win for Minnesota.Taylor’s early success with the Gophers induced warnings from head coach P.J. Fleck that Taylor might leave the U for another school — with name, image and likeness (NIL) compensation a consideration.Comparisons were made to Mar’Keise “Bucky” Irving, a true freshman who left Minnesota via the portal for Oregon before the 2022 season. With the help of the Ducks’ robust NIL collective and the deep pockets of Nike founder Phil Knight, Irving has since had two 1,000-yard rushing seasons for the championship-contending Ducks. But Taylor allayed those comparisons and concerns with a messa...

Ryan Hartman eager to rejoin rejuvenated Wild

Ryan Hartman returned to the Wild on Saturday with a new haircut and a new line, but the spirited forward was the same as ever after a 40-minute practice at TRIA Rink.Asked about the televised — but, alas, not subtitled — conversation he had with Detroit’s Mortiz Seider while the two were in the penalty box during a 4-1 loss last Sunday in Detroit, Hartman said, “He asked me to fight, so I said, ‘Let’s fight when we get out of the box,’ and he said no.“So, I called his bluff, I think.”Seider had come to the defense of Alex DeBrincat after Hartman took the Red Wings forward’s feet out front under him. The NHL suspended Hartman two games for the slew foot on Monday, the same day Wild general manager Bill Guerin fired Dean Evason as head coach.“That wasn’t intentional,” Hartman said.Regardless, he has been an observer for the Wild’s first two games under new coach John Hynes, convincing victories against St. Louis and Nashville. When Hartman hits the ice for Sunday’s 1 p.m. puck drop a...
