MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — With each empty at-bat by Carlos Correa, the exasperation mounted in the crowd in Minnesota. The boos at the end were merely the natural progression.Correa went 0 for 5 — dropping his batting average to .185 — and stranded six runners on base for the Twins in their 6-1 loss to the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night, and the star shortstop said he “absolutely” heard the booing that followed his last two fruitless plate appearances.“I’d boo myself too with the amount of money I’m making, if I’m playing like that,” said Correa, who signed a six-year, $200 million contract with the Twins on Jan. 11 after richer agreements with the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets fell through amid concern about the long-term health of his ankle. There’s no injury here, just a stunningly slow start to the season for a player the Twins committed more money to than anyone else in franchise history — hence the boos.“Obviously, it’s acceptable. It’s part of the game, part of sport...Kirby throws 7 sharp innings, Mariners blank Rangers 5-0

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — The All Blacks and Japan will play regular test matches under an agreement signed by the New Zealand and Japanese rugby unions which might also see a faltering first step toward a global club competition. The memorandum of understanding between the unions will see both countries explore opportunities for New Zealand-based Super Rugby franchises to play matches against clubs from the Japan League One professional competition. Those matches will occur outside the current window for Super Rugby Pacific, which involves Fijian Drua, Moana Pasifika and five clubs each from Australia and New Zealand. A team from Japan and leading franchises from South Africa formerly participated in the Super Rugby competition but didn’t return after the pandemic shutdown. If the club matches in Japan are successful and other countries such as Australia seek to participate, it could provide an early framework for a global club tournament. In the meantime, the two nations ha...Denver weather: Damaging hail, wind, tornadoes possible Wednesday

DENVER (KDVR) — Lawmakers at the state Capitol are done with this year's session. ISTANBUL — How did a popular soap opera called “Cranberry Sherbet” suddenly become one of the most heated discussion points before Turkey’s crucial elections on Sunday? It’s all to do with a character called Nursema, and her shocking fate is pushing viewers to pose a tricky question: Who would she vote for? The answers are not comforting for President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who is seeking to extend his 20-year rule in the impending vote. Nursema is a strong, bright and devout Muslim in the show, and millions of Turkish women can easily identify with her. Turkey’s legions of soap addicts were stunned by a brutal plot twist in which she is married off to an abusive husband by her conservative family. He attempts to rape her, then shoves her out of a window when she resists, almost killing her. In early April, Turkey’s media watchdog reacted harshly to the harrowing storyline, doling out a fine to the makers of the series and slapping the drama with a ...Video shows bullet strike ground during Little League game in San Marcos

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Billboards across Iran’s capital proclaim that women should wear their mandatory headscarves to honor their mothers. But perhaps for the first time since the chaotic days following Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, more women — both young and old — choose not to do so.Such open defiance comes after months of protests over the September death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in the custody of the country’s morality police, for wearing her hijab too loosely. While the demonstrations appear to have cooled, the choice by some women not to cover their hair in public poses a new challenge to the country’s theocracy. The women’s pushback also lays bare schisms in Iran that had been veiled for decades.Authorities have made legal threats and closed down some businesses serving women not wearing the hijab. Police and volunteers issue verbal warnings in subways, airports and other public places. Text messages have targeted drivers who had women without head covering in ...Prosecutors want 25-year sentence in Texas protest killing
