BRUSSELS — Beijing is giving Europe a yellow card in a future-defining trade war.As soon as the Netherlands announced new restrictions on exports of advanced microchip machines to China on Friday, Chinese trade officials on Monday hit back with an export-control regime tantamount to threatening a ban on exports of two types of critical raw materials to unfriendly countries on national security grounds. The two minerals on Beijing’s hit list — gallium and germanium — are well-chosen, given their role in making goods like semiconductors, 5G base stations and solar panels, items that are symbolic of the European Union’s highly prioritized digital and green transitions. Both metals are considered “critical” and “strategic” by EU standards, meaning they rely on a single source and they are important to EU industries, as well as European defense needs.“In order to safeguard national security and interests, with the approval of the State Council, it is decided to impl...Driver killed after single-car rollover crash in Falmouth

LONDON (AP) — Homeowners and renters in the U.K. faced further grim news Tuesday as mortgage rates hit levels not seen since unfunded tax cuts announced by the government last fall spooked investors. With the Bank of England raising interest rates to a 15-year high of 5% to battle high inflation, it’s natural for lenders to increase the cost of borrowing to consumers and businesses. But inflation is proving more stubborn than expected, and the bank is expected to keep hiking rates, potentially to 6%, a level not seen since 2001.That prospect is having a knock-on effect in the cost of mortgages. According to financial information company Moneyfacts, the average rate for a five-year fixed rate mortgage in the U.K. hit 6.01% on Tuesday from 5.97% the previous day. That’s the highest since the aftermath of last fall’s tax plan from Liz Truss’ short-lived government, which caused investors to lose faith in the state of Britain’s public finances. I think for everyone as well,” Alcaraz said on court. “With the roof or not, I have to show my best level.”His best led Alcaraz to his first major title at the U.S. Open last year. He reached the semifinals at this year’s French Open, but Djokovic ended up winning that match en route to his 23rd Grand Slam title. At Wimbledon, Alcaraz reached the second r...Latest news
