Bob Melvin is coming home to San Francisco as Giants manager after an uneasy time in San Diego

Published Fri, 07 Mar 2025 01:21:02 GMT

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — At least once every time Bob Melvin came to San Francisco as a visiting manager, he allowed himself to believe that maybe someday he would wear a Giants uniform again.Running the bleachers before games, Melvin would glance out at iconic McCovey Cove. Admittedly superstitious, he used to take good-luck, head-first plunges down the 60-foot Coca-Cola slide beyond left field until they locked the attraction. On Wednesday, after buttoning up his new No. 6 Giants jersey as the franchise's 39th manager, Melvin called it “surreal” that this moment was actually happening. After 20 years as a big league manager — including a recent, turbulent end to his time guiding the rival San Diego Padres — Melvin is coming home.“I think probably every series I would look in that dugout and look over to the other side and say, ‘Maybe someday, hopefully,’” said Melvin, who turns 62 on Saturday. “There were always times here, I can admit that now, that I was hoping at some point in time I...

‘The war has begun’: Quebec coroner hears of stalking, custody concerns in familicide

MONTREAL — A former work colleague of a Montreal woman who was killed along with her children by her estranged spouse in December 2019 told an inquiry Wednesday that he was following her despite a court order forbidding contact.“He was stalking her,” Najla Ben Ammar told the inquiry looking into the December 2019 killings of Dahia Khellaf, 42, and her sons, Adam, 4, and Aksil, 2.Police say the three were strangled by Nabil Yssaad, 46, who took his own life by jumping from a hospital window a day before the bodies were found in the couple’s home in eastern Montreal. She said Khellaf had given examples of Yssaad’s presence — her vehicle was cleared of snow every morning, she would see him in the alleyways near her home and he would walk past the glassed bank branch where Khellaf worked to see if she was present.Ben Ammar said the couple had split in the months before the killings, and the fate of the children was top of mind. Khellaf wanted full custody while Ys...

Kansas court system down nearly 2 weeks in `security incident’ that has hallmarks of ransomware

Published Fri, 07 Mar 2025 01:21:02 GMT

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas officials are calling a massive computer outage that’s kept most of the state’s courts offline for two weeks a “security incident” and, while they have provided no explanation, experts say it has all the hallmarks of a ransomware attack. The disruption has left attorneys unable to search online records and forced them to file motions the old fashioned way — on paper. Courts are limping along, although the growing piles of paper are a mess that will have to be sorted and scanned eventually. “It’s really just slowed the whole system down,” said Chris Joseph, a Lawrence-based criminal defense attorney. Since 2019, ransomware groups have targeted 18 state, city or municipal court systems, said analyst Allan Liska of the cybersecurity firm Recorded Future. That includes one in Dallas, where some jury trials had to be canceled this year. But state-focused attacks have been much less frequent, and have not yet rivaled what is happening in Kansas. WASHINGTON (AP) — All or most of a $267,000 loan obtained by Supreme CourtJustice Clarence Thomas to buy a high-end motorcoach appears to have been forgiven, raising tax and ethics questions, according to a new report by Senate Democrats.Anthony “Tony” Welters, a longtime friend of Thomas who made the loan in 1999, forgave the debt after nine years of what he called interest-only payments, says the report, which was released Wednesday by Democrats on the Senate Finance Committee. The loan’s existence was first reported during the summer by the New York Times. Committee Democrats undertook their inquiry following the Times’ story.Thomas, 75, has been at the center of a heightened focus on ethics at the Supreme Court over his undisclosed travel and other ties with wealthy conservative supporters. The court, the only part of the federal judiciary with a formal code of conduct, is debating whether to adopt an ethics code and, in recent months, three justices have voiced their...

Regulator to restart consultations on long-delayed drug-price reform guidelines

OTTAWA — The federal agency that regulates the price of patented medicines says it plans to relaunch consultations on the finer points of long-delayed drug-price reforms. The Patented Medicine Prices Review Board stalled the implementation of new guidelines last year to give more time for industry groups to weigh in, which caused a major rift at the agency and culminated in the resignation of several board members and the executive director. The reforms, which are intended to lower the cost of patented drugs in Canada, were put on hold indefinitely. The agency says it plans to hold a roundtable in December where all parties can voice their opinions and concerns, but has not announced when new guidelines are expected to come into effect. The implementation of the reforms had been delayed several times throughout the pandemic.Meanwhile, the agency announced it has filled all the board member positions that were left vacant after last year’s discord. This report by The Canadian Pres...

Judge dismisses Birmingham-Southern lawsuit against Alabama state treasurer over loan denial

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama judge has dismissed Birmingham-Southern College’s lawsuit against the state treasurer over a loan denial, a decision that could put the future of the 167-year-old private college in jeopardy. Birmingham-Southern College filed a lawsuit last week against state Treasurer Young Boozer, saying Boozer wrongly denied a $30 million loan from a program created by lawmakers to provide a financial lifeline to the college. On Wednesday, Montgomery Circuit Judge James Anderson granted the state’s request to dismiss the lawsuit on the grounds that the state treasurer could not be sued for exercising his duties. Anderson said the legislation gave discretion to the treasure to decide who qualified for a loan. “I’m sympathetic to the college and the position they are in, but I’m looking at the legislative language,” Anderson said. Birmingham-Southern is exploring an appeal to the Alabama Supreme Court, college President Daniel Coleman said ...

Florida orders state universities to disband pro-Palestinian student group, saying it backs Hamas

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s administration is linking a pro-Palestinian student organization to terrorism and is ordering state universities to ban the group from campuses, saying it illegally backs Hamas militants who attacked Israel earlier this month. As Israel’s attacks on Gaza have intensified, some college students have expressed solidarity with Palestinians, resulting in swift censure from some Jewish academics and even some prospective employers. But Florida has gone further, taking the extraordinary step of saying Students for Justice in Palestine is supporting a “terrorist organization.”State university system Chancellor Ray Rodrigues wrote to university presidents Tuesday at Gov. Ron DeSantis’ urging, directing them to disband chapters of SJP after the national group took the position that “Palestinian students in exile are PART of this movement, not in solidarity with this movement.”“It is a felony under Florida law to ‘knowingly ...
