'Zoomies': Why do dogs get them? (WHTM) - If you have a dog, you may notice sometimes they will have a burst of energy and run around for seconds or minutes on end. So, why do they do this? According to the American Kennel Club, Frenetic Random Activity Periods (FRAPs), also known as "zoomies" are normal in dogs. This is when they have explosive energy and begin to run around, in circles, or just run back and forth. The AKC says a common reason for zoomies is an excess of energy that builds up in dogs and is then released all at once. Zoomies last only a few seconds to a few minutes before your pooch gets tired and will stop to rest. Purina says zoomies will happen less frequently as your dog gets older. Things you should never feed a duck Aside from a release of pent-up energy, zoomies also may be caused by certain situations, according to Purina:During trainingDogs can build up nervous energy when trying to learn new things. After bathsA dog might get zoomies out of relief after having a bath or just to dry off....

Real World Economics: Capital reserves needed; here’s why

Real World Economics: Capital reserves needed; here’s why Edward LottermanUtter nerve! Gall! Chutzpah! Shamelessness!Even with multiple thesauruses, it’s hard to describe the level of cynicism in modern corporate communications. This rant is prompted by recent propaganda from Goldman Sachs alerting the world about threats small businesses face from proposed new capital adequacy standards for banks. If implemented, the Wall Street behemoth tells us, there will be a capital crunch crippling small businesses’ ability to operate and expand.Well! Thank God someone still stands up for the little people, protecting us common folk from inept and crushing regulation by unelected bureaucrats and central bankers.Yeah, that press release really tripped my trigger. Perhaps because I had just gotten yet another email from “Farmers For Free Trade — a “grassroots advocacy group” dating from 2017 when Donald Trump initiated trade wars with China and our neighbors to the north and south.I still interact with farmers back home and I have not met o...

Do smartphones expire? Sort of

Do smartphones expire? Sort of You’re undoubtedly familiar with expiration dates. From the milk in your fridge to the Twinkies in your pantry (yes, even those can expire) — but what about your phone? It’s not like your phone starts to sprout mold or smell funny after you’ve had it for a while. If you can avoid cracking the screen and keep it clean, it might be hard to even tell how old your phone is from a distance. But yes, in a sense, it can "expire." If you have an older iPhone, you may have actually experienced this already. Take, for example, the last major iPhone update Apple pushed out in September, iOS 17. While it introduced a bevy of new features for iPhone users, not everyone was able to get the update.  Chuck E. Cheese is getting rid of its animatronic bands, except here Apple made the massive update available to select models, dating only as far back as the iPhone XR and XS models (both released in 2018). If you have an iPhone 8 (released in 2017) or earlier, you don’t have iOS 17 and you’...
